Wayfinding Pua Case

Voyaging and Wayfinding Traditions – An opportunity to learn, experience and live the traditions of the ancestors.

Hosted by the NCOCA

When: Sunday August 17, 2014

Presidents – An opportunity presented itself and we moved quickly to bring it to our NCOCA ohana.  Kumu Pua Case will be in the San Francisco Bay Area in two week time.  Kuma and I first met when the vaka arrived on our shores in August 2012.  Kumu is well renowned in Hawaii for her knowledge, traditions and protocol on Hawaiian voyaging.  Recently she presided over the departure protocols for Hokule’a and Hikianalia as they departed for their 3 year journey around the world this past May.  With the help of Kumu Kau’i Peralto, we promised the other that soon we will meet and learn more about our voyaging traditions.

That time will be Sunday August 17th in the Bay Area at 2 locations:

Location/Session 1: Kilohana OCC Practice Site @ Marine Science Institute, 500 Discovery Pkwy, Redwood City, 94063
Time: 9am to 12pm

Location/Session 2: Tamalpais OCC Practice Site @ Fort Baker Sausalito (Presidio Yacht Club)
Time: 2pm to 3pm (attendees are welcome to arrive at 12pm to 2pm and participate in an outrigger rigging contest)

Who to contact: Bernie Bernal, 925.337.4558

Donations will be accepted to support our guest speakers.

I would like to thank Kumu Kau’i for making this work and organizing Kumu Pua’s time.  Kumu Kau’i has been a strong supporter of the NCOCA…teaching and educating local clubs of our Hawaiian heritage as well as myself.  I would also like to thank Tamalpais OCC for helping to make this happen and share this event at their Fort Baker practice site so that the north bay clubs can participate closer to home.  We are also opening this event up to local halau.  Please feel free to pass this even to friends and family as all can benefit.  We are asking for donations to help offset the costs for Kumu.

I hope you can find the time to join us and participate in living the traditions.  Nainoa Thompson, Pacific Voyagers and original Hokule’a crew member, said “that its not enough to read about our heritage as its destined to be lost forever…we must voyage and sail to ensure it is not lost or forgotten.  This we must do this now.”

Feel free to contact me for additional information.
